‘Thanaara’ the Malayalam movie starring Shine Tom Chacko, Aju Varghese and Vishnu Unnikrishnan hit theatre today, directed by Haridas, a well-known director who created momentum through films like Georgekutty Care of Georgekutty, Indraprastha, Ooty Pattanam and Kinnaripuzhayoram. With him, Raffi, the director of many films, joined Thaanara as a script writer, produced by Biju V Mathai and co-produced by Suja Mathai. Gopi Sundar has set a mellifluous music which is complemented by Vishnu Narayanan’s subtle cinematography.
‘Thaanara’ brings laughter and excitement which has only a few characters and events that take place in a house overnight. The film is based on the track of the ‘Puzzled Comedy’ that has always been successful in Malayalam, as it may satisfy the audiences who love to watch hilarious incidents taking place in a confined space.
(Spoiler Alert)
Thangachan is known for his burglary and has been considered an ‘honest thief’ because he calculated how much amount he needed to meet ends and planned his theft accordingly, he never took more than he needed. But, there is something hidden inside his monicker ‘honest thief’ which leaves the audience to crack up towards the end.
One day, Thankachan arrives at the farmhouse of MLA Adarsh, thinking that the MLA has gone to Delhi. Anjali, the daughter of a former home minister, who is unhappily married to Adarsh, unbeknown to her husband, monitors his activities with the help of a police officer named James. The incidents that befell after that may make the audience laugh their heart out. The director has maintained Raffi’s complex yet vigorous script in such a way that from the beginning, the laughter environment develops step by step and eventually becomes chaos.

Vishnu Unnikrishnan who plays the thief and Shine Tom Chacko as the MLA are the majority on screen who played their roles so well. Deepti Sati, who plays the female lead in the film maintained her role throughout. Aju Varghese, Chinnu Chandini and Sneha Babu shined in their character roles. Thanara is a film that bestows a little bit of funny scenes here and there but guarantees nothing apart from these trivial things. As a whole, the movie has no essence in any other department except comedy and can be considered the weakest script by veteran director Raffi.
