As Raayan hit the big screen today as the 50th movie of Tamil star Dhanush, fans are thrilled to welcome his performance as an actor and also a film-maker. The milestone movie’s directorial by the actor himself has left the cinephiles in awe to enjoy the talents of the versatile actor.

The film, set in the background of revenge, violence, and betrayal, is getting reviews from moviegoers. Much like the fans were driven by an adrenaline rush when they watched the trailer, the reviewers poured positive rating with a mix of contrasting perspectives. While the Times of India called the movie “A violent emotional drama that is engrossing despite its predictable plot, the Hindustan Times observed it as “actor’s gangster drama packs with unexpected twists and captivating climax.”

The Times Of India praised the actor’s filmmaking craft, stating that the movie is a directorial success of Dhanush. “The filmmaking is sure-footed, capturing the aggression lurking within the characters, both male and female, while his pacing keeps the narrative moving at a clip that has us engrossed in the proceedings,” the media house analysed while giving credit to the strength of Dhanush’s command over storytelling and the performances. It also admitted that Raayan managed to overcome its weakest aspect of predictability.

The Hindustan Times commended the second directorial venture of Danush for treating it differently and highly engaging with plenty of plot twists, though the theme was not new.

“The only aspect that could been a minor flaw is the routine writing in the first half which is a sort of deja vu. He has thrown in some humour intermittently by way of dialogues and this works in the film’s favour without hampering its flow,” the media house observed, noting that the ending was not as sharp as expected. However, Dhanush could set up the platform for a sequel to Raayan, it opined.

Notably, the media outlet lauded AR Rahman, highlighting that he scored the music and BGM for the movie, delivering a brilliant background score that elevated the film. It also reviewed all characters’ performance as good.
