1. Pushpaka Vimana
How would it be to watch a full-length silent film in the dark humour genre? That is what this 1987-released Kamal Haasan film is all about. This courageous initiative of the star received a lot of reception and acclamation. This film was also considered to be the one that opened a new dimension in art house entertainment.
It revolves around an unemployed graduate who encounters a drunk rich man unconscious and takes over his lifestyle after keeping him prisoner. However, he does not realise the dangers he has brought upon himself because a hired killer believes him to be his target.
2. Apoorva Sagodharargal
This film always stays close to the hearts of Kamal Haasan fans, where the actor portrays triple roles as a father and twin brothers. Experimenting with his acting prowess, the actor portrays the role of a dwarf, who was almost half his original height and created history.
The 1989 release shattered the box office and completed a 200-day run in theaters. The plot revolves around twin brothers revenge against the criminals who killed their father.
3. Aalavandhan
His creation Aalavandhan was the first film in India to use a motion control rig to capture the movement of pictures. Kamal Haasan’s 2000-released Indian epic historical drama Hey Ram is another experimental film of his career, which was the subject of much controversy. This directorial of Kamal Haasan was an alternate history film that depicts India’s Partition, Direct Action Day, and the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi by Nathuram Godse. Receiving wide acclamation, this film was selected for the 2000’s Oscar nomination by the Film Federation of India. Internationally, the film was screened at the 25th Toronto International Film Festival and at the 2000 Locarno Festival.
5. Dasavathaaram
Dasavathaaram is yet another experimentation of the actor, which hit theatres in 2008. This sci-fi action film features the actor in 10 different roles and incorporates numerous themes and philosophies, including chaos theory, the butterfly effect, the existence of God, casteism, Islamophobia, Vaishnavism, and determinism.
