Veteran Tamil Actor Delhi Ganesh Dies Aged 80

Delhi Ganesh, veteran Tamil actor known for his versatility and dedication to his craft with a career spanning over four decades in the Tamil film industry, died on Saturday late night due to age related illness. “We deeply regret to inform that our father Mr Delhi Ganesh has passed away on 9th November at around 11 PM,” Ganesh’s family said in a statement. Born on August 1, 1944, in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, Ganesh initially worked with the Indian Air Force before stepping in to acting. His big break came in 1976, thanks to legendary Tamil filmmaker K Balachander, who recognised Ganesh’s talent and introduced him in the film Pattina Pravesam. This marked the beginning of a prolific career, with Ganesh going on to star in over 400 films.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of the illustrious film personality, Thiru Delhi Ganesh Ji. He was blessed with impeccable acting skills. He will be fondly remembered for the depth he brought to each role and for his ability to connect with viewers across generations. He was also passionate about theatre. Condolences to his family and admirers,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a statement.

A beloved character actor, Delhi Ganesh is known for his ability to effortlessly portray diverse roles, ranging from comedic and supportive characters to complex, intense roles that explore a wide array of emotions.

“Deeply pained to know of the demise of #DelhiGanesh sir, one of Tamil cinema’s most versatile actors.The void he leaves behind will be hard to fill. My deepest condolences to his family members, friends and fans,” said Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi.

His memorable performances in films like Sindhu Bhairavi, Michael Madana Kama Rajan, Pithamagan, Apoorva Raagangal, and Nayakan have earned him critical acclaim and a loyal fan following. He has collaborated with some of Tamil cinema’s greatest directors, including Mani Ratnam, Kamal Haasan, and Bharathiraja, solidifying his reputation as a skilled, dependable performer.

“A phenomenal actor and an amazing soul departs for the heavens to entertain them. You will be so sorely missed, sir,” said Tamil and Bollywood actor R Madhavan.

Beyond his work in cinema, Ganesh has also appeared in Tamil television serials, further showcasing his versatility. Known for his professionalism, Delhi Ganesh is a respected figure in the industry and continues to inspire upcoming actors.
