Heavy Rainfall: IMD Issues Red Alert For Maharashtra, Kerala, Goa

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rainfall and thunderstorms alerts for different parts of the country. As per the recent update, monsoon rains will lash over coastal Kerala, Maharashtra, Konkan Goa and other states.

Since heavy rains are continuing in many parts of Maharashtra, the Kamwari River in the Bhiwandi area of Thane started overflowing on Sunday, resulting knee-deep water filling the houses of people living near the river banks.

In Maharashtra, a red-alert has been announced till July 16 and along with it warnings for flooding and waterlogging has also been issued. Mumbai, Thane and Palghar will receive heavy rain on July 15 to 17, the Regional Met Centre reports.

The six districts in Kerala are on heavy rainfall alert and schools and colleges across these districts will remain closed on Monday. The weather body announced a red alert for Malappuram, Kannur and Kasaragod in Kerala for Monday, and an orange alert for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode and Wayanad.

Similarly, after IMD issuing a red alert in parts of the state, the Goa education department declared a holiday for schools up to Class 12 on Monday.

In an update, the weather body predicted that parts of Kerala, Karnataka and Goa will receive over 20 cm of rain in the next few days.

“The monsoon is shifting downward from today. We are issuing a red alert for coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Konkan Goa for the coming days. There may be more than 20 cm of rain there. Delhi-NCR will receive light rain in the coming days. There is no alert for Delhi,” IMD scientist Dr Naresh Kumar told news agency ANI.

Light to moderate rainfall is expected over the regions for East and North India this week. Besides, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and North Interior Karnataka are expected to receive heavy rainfall till July 19.
