Karnataka government advised public to avoid unnecessary visits to affected areas, increased border surveillance.
One more Nipah virus infection confirmed in Kerala”s Kozhikode and the number of patients tested positive has turned to six which was five earlier.
The recent case is confirmed in a 39-year-old man who sought treatment at a private hospital where the Nipah positive patients went for other treatments, informed Kerala Health Minister Veena George on Friday morning.
The district is on high alert and wearing a mask is now mandatory.
The samples of 11 people sent for testing on Wednesday were negative.
Among the samples of 30, sent on Thursday, 15 are health workers who had close contact with the patients.
234 more people who have interacted with those who tested positive have been traced, bringing the contact list to 950.
As Nipah virus returns to haunt Kerala with new cases detected in Kozhikode, the Karnataka government on Thursday issued a circular and advised the general public to avoid unnecessary travel to the affected areas in the near state.
According to the circular, the state has intensified its surveillance measures in the border districts of Kodagu, Dakshin Kannada, Chamrajanagara, & Mysore and at the points of entries to Karnataka.
“In view of reporting… 2 deaths in Kozhikode district of Kerala state, the surveillance activities in the districts bordering Kerala State need to be intensified to prevent the transmission at all levels is expected”, said the circular.

On Thursday, the ICMR”s National Institute of Virology in Pune sent its mobile BSL-3 laboratory to Kozhikode to test samples for Nipah virus.
A team of experts from the Department of Animal Husbandry has also been deployed to assist the state in the surveillance of animals, official sources told.
The number of people tested positive has become 6, earlier it was 5 with two deaths.
Two well equipped laboratories, and a mobile virology lab for diagnosing and conducting follow up tests are set up.
As the list for the contacted people is likely to rise, Kozhikode district is under strict watch. Schools and colleges remains shut, and public gatherings are prohibited.
Apart from Kozhikode, neighbouring districts of Malappuram, Wayanad and Kannur were also instructed to be on high alert.
