Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Thursday slammed the ongoing ‘merciless’ bombing in Gaza which has “continued with more savagery than before the truce”. The congress leader urged India being member of the international community ‘to stand up for what is right’.

In the post shared on X, the Congress general secretary said that India has always chose to stand up for “what is just on international stage”. She also reminded that India has fought for sanctions against the apartheid regime of South Africa and supported the Palestinian cause from the very beginning.

“The merciless bombing of Gaza continues with even more savagery than before the truce. Food supplies are scarce, medical facilities have been destroyed and basic amenities have been shut down. 16,000 innocent civilians have been killed, including almost 10,000 children, more than 60 journalists and hundreds of medical workers,” Priyanka expressed her distress.

She asserted the fact that an entire nation is being wiped out right in front of the eye of many. Since the October 7 attack 16,000 million civilians lost their lives including 10,000 children.

“These are people with dreams and hopes just like the rest of us. They are being ruthlessly thrown to their deaths right before our eyes. Where is our humanity?” she wrote.

It is India’s duty as a member of the international community to stand up for the Palestinian cause, she asserted, “We must do all we can to ensure a ceasefire at the earliest.”

After eight weeks of war, more than 16,200 Palestinian civilians has lost their lives since October 7, as per the report of  Ministry of health in Gaza.

Meanwhile, the UN secretary General Antonio Guterres made a rare move on Wednesday by invoking Article 99 of the UN Charter, urging the Security Council to act on the war in Gaza. In his letter to the council’s president, he invoked the article, saying that the current situation in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, “may aggravate existing threats to the maintenance of international peace and security”.
