“Forgive Me…” 17-Year-Old Commits Suicide Over Not Clearing JEE

A 17-year-old in New Delhi committed suicide after she could not clear the national entrance exam required for entry to top engineering colleges. She had left a note to her parents apologising for not being able to clear the examination.

“Forgive me, I couldn’t do it,” she wrote in the note, the police said.

“Yesterday, at 11:25 hrs, a PCR call regarding a girl aged 17, jumping off the roof of the 7th floor of a building in Okhla main market was received at PS Jamia Nagar. She was preparing for JEE after clearing the 12th class. She has left a suicide note citing study pressure and not meeting expectations as a reason. Proceedings under 194 BNSS are underway,” the Delhi Police said.

The police said that in the suicide note left behind, she had mentioned the burden of study pressure and her inability to meet the expectations as the reason behind her decision, reports The Stateman.

The incident occurred just three days after a second-year Master’s student from the Indian Institute of Technology, IIT had died by suicide late Tuesday night.

Competitive exams such as JEE and NEET which were meant to build careers are sadly now becoming the major cause of stress, anxiety and other mental-health-related issues among students in India. Most of the students face pressure from their families to get admission to the top technical and medical colleges.

As per the findings of the 2023 study conducted by the Lokniti-CSDS in Kota, more than 85 per of students spend six to seven hours every day in coaching classes, and some even stretch it to eight hours. And thus India is the world’s suicide capital over 2.6 lakh cases.  According to the World Health Organization, the average suicide rate in India is 10.9 per lakh population. Tragically, one of the highest youth suicide rates is reported in India.

As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), data states that one student takes their own life every 42 minutes in 2020, which is an average of 34 student suicides per day.
