A California court in the United States has directed Zoho founder and CEO Sridhar Vembu to deposit a bond of $1.7 billion (roughly Rs 15,000 crore) in connection with his divorce proceedings, finding himself at the center of global headlines.

The Indian businessman from Tamil Nadu is now known for undergoing the world’s fourth most expensive divorce. The amount is also described as the costliest divorce linked to an Indian man.

Across the world, the most expensive divorces include the separation of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Melinda Gates in 2021, with Melinda Gates being believed to have received assets worth around $73 billion, including shares, investments and real estate. The second on the list is the divorce of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott in 2019, with Scott reportedly getting around $38 billion as part of the settlement.

The third-costliest divorce was that of French-American art dealer Alec Wildenstein and Jocelyn Wildenstein in 1999, with Jocelyn receiving nearly $3.8 billion, all grabbing international media headlines.

However, the Indian businessman’s sheer scale of the divorce settlement has also made headlines, with a Rs 15,000 crore divorce settlement for his former wife. Vembu married Pramila Srinivasan in 1993, and the couple has a son. Sridhar Vembu’s net worth stood at approximately $5.85 billion in 2024, placing him 39th on the list of India’s richest individuals, according to Forbes.
