New Delhi: In a special gesture, Iran will temporarily open its airspace for Indian evacuation flights. The Iranian government said it is working closely with Indian authorities to facilitate the evacuation of Indian students stranded across Iranian cities.

Iranian Deputy Chief of Mission Javad Hosseini said that Iran is cooperating with India to bring back about 1,000 Indian nationals. Three Mahan Air flights have been arranged for this purpose, and the students are expected to return to Delhi beginning tonight.

“We are cooperating with India in the evacuation. Indian nationals were first moved to a safer place and then assisted with onward arrangements. Three Mahan Air flights will bring them home,”  Hosseini told News18.

As per the reports, flights are expected to operate from Mashaad to Delhi in coordinated batches. As ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran escalated, the Indian government on Wednesday announced the launching of ‘Operation Sindhu’ to evacuate Indian nationals stranded in Iran.

“India launched Operation Sindhu to evacuate Indian nationals from Iran. India evacuated 110 students from northern Iran who crossed into Armenia under the supervision of our Missions in Iran and Armenia on 17th June. They departed from Yerevan on a special flight and will arrive in New Delhi in the early hours of 19th June 2025,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement on Thursday.

Meanwhile, as the air strike between Israel and Iran entered its second week this Friday, European diplomats are pushing for negotiations. US President Donald Trump on Thursday said he would decide within 2 weeks whether to strike Iran. Trump is open to a diplomatic solution with Iran, White House said adding that his main priority remains preventing the country from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
