Kuwait Fire Tragedy: Mortal Remains Of 45 Indians Arrive In Kerala, Bodies Handed Over To Families (image-X/GeoGlimps)

An Indian Air Force (IAF) flight carrying the mortal remains of 45 Indians who were killed in the tragic fire at Kuwait’s Mangaf reached Cochin International Airport on Friday morning. The remains of the deceased were loaded into ambulances, which will be taken to their respective native places and handed over to their families.

Among the dead, around 23 have been identified as Keralites. The remaining 7 are from Tamil Nadu and 1 from Karnataka. The remaining bodies will be sent to Delhi on the same flight. According to the reports, the body of the native from Karnataka will be airlifted.

According to a press release by the Indian embassy in Kuwait, the deceased are from Andhra Pradesh (3), Uttar Pradesh (3), Odisha (2), Bihar, Punjab, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Haryana, and Jharkhand (1 each). The Embassy has also dedicated a 24×7 helpline (+965-65505249) for the family members of the deceased and the injured.

Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh, who coordinated with Kuwaiti authorities to ensure quick repatriation, accompanied the bodies on the flight.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Union Minister Suresh Gopi were among the many ministers who paid their homage to the deceased at the airport. State health minister Veena George stated that all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure that all bodies are moved to the mortuary in case the funeral is not scheduled for Friday.

The state cabinet will provide Rs five lakhs ex gratia for the family members of each of the Keralites who have lost their lives in the fire mishap in Kuwait. The resident vice chairman, P. Shriramakrishnan, of the organisation said they were working with Malayali associations in Kuwait along with Lok Kerala Sabha members to assist in the relief operations.
