Major Security Scare On New Year’s Eve: Car Carrying 150 Kg Explosives Seized In Rajasthan
Police in Rajasthan’s Tonk district seized a car loaded with a large quantity of explosives on Wednesday, raising serious security concerns.
Acting on a tip-off, the police intercepted a Maruti Ciaz in the Baroni police station area and found 150 kg of illegal ammonium nitrate hidden inside bags of urea fertiliser.
Along with ammonium nitrate, the police also recovered around 200 explosive cartridges and six bundles of safety fuse wire, measuring nearly 1,100 metres in total. The explosive material was allegedly being transported from Bundi to Tonk for supply.
Two men, identified as Surendra Mochi and Surendra Patwa, have been arrested in connection with the case. The car used to transport the explosives has also been seized.
Police officials said the accused are being questioned to determine the purpose of the consignment and whether it was intended for illegal activities such as unlawful mining or other criminal acts.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Mrityunjay Mishra told NDTV that the seizure was made following specific intelligence inputs. “A major operation was carried out promptly after receiving information.
Two accused have been arrested, and the investigation is ongoing. All possible angles are being examined,” he told NDTV.
Ammonium nitrate is a white crystalline chemical commonly used as a fertiliser but is also known for its use in making explosives. Its illegal movement has raised alarm in recent times due to its misuse in deadly attacks.
The seizure in Tonk comes on a worrying day, as 2,900 kg of explosives, including ammonium nitrate, were also recovered from Faridabad in Haryana, just about 50 km from Delhi.
Several people, including doctors from Jammu and Kashmir, have reportedly been arrested in that case.
Security agencies are now on high alert, as ammonium nitrate was also used in the recent blast near the Red Fort in Delhi, which claimed 15 lives.
