Mohali, Punjab: At least two persons have died in a building collapse in Sohana village at Mohali in Punjab on Saturday evening. As per reports, at least five people have been trapped under the debris of the collapsed four-storey building, and the police have arrested two building owners under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhit in connection with the tragedy.

The building reportedly collapsed due to the construction works and digging next to the tragedy-hit site, as per the preliminary investigations. The land purportedly sunk due to the excavation, which adversely impacted the building basement, resulting in the fall.

The diseased includes a 20-year-old woman from Himachal Pradesh. The woman was rescued from the rubble and later succumbed to injuries in the hospital.

Visuals shared by news agency IANS showed rescue operations continuing using cutters and drill machines to remove debris.

 

The rescue personnel on Sunday discovered another body of a man, and the identity is yet to be declared. Mohali sub-divisional magistrate Damandeep Kaur, in a statement, confirmed the second death in the incident. The Army and NDRF are working to reach the basement to take out the remaining trapped persons from the debris. The Mohali senior superintendent of police, Deepak Pareek, has said that the police team is also working on proving all arrangements to clear the debris as soon as possible.

Reacting to the unfortunate incident, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed his pain. “The entire administration and other rescue teams have been deployed at the spot. I am in constant touch with the administration,” the chief minister said.

The building, which housed a gym in the basement and had four floors, collapsed due to excavation work being carried out at the adjacent plot by the owners of the building, police said.
