Chennai, Tamil Nadu: Actor-politician Kamal Haasan on Wednesday accused that BJP is attempting to create “Hindia”, and expressed his opposition to the Centre’s proposed delimitation exercise. While speaking at the all-party meeting held by the DMK-led government in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MKM) chief said that the delimitation of parliamentary constituencies based on the 2026 Census will affect several states in India.

In the meeting, Haasan said that delimitation was not held in 1976 and 2001, and argued that there was no need to increase the numbers in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. In 1976, and 2001, despite during the tenure of prime ministers from different political backgrounds, the Central governments at that time gave priority to federalism and did not proceed with delimitation based on population.

He then underlined that the population has significantly increased since India’s independence, but the number of parliamentary representative has remained the same. Adding further, Haasan said that he firmly believes that there is no need to change the number of members in either the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha. “Regardless of which political alliance wins an election, our position will remain unchanged,” he stated it as MNM’s stand.

Actor-politician also pointed out that while the Central government frames policies, it is the state governments that implement them. If any form of representation needs to increased based on population, it should be in state legislatures, not in Parliament, he observes. Haasan further questions the real motive behind raising the issue of delimitation and asked people to look into the timing behind this move.

Continuing further, Haasan accused the BJP-led Centre for trying to “turn India into Hindia” by forcing non-Hindi speaking states to accept the language.

“While we dream of an inclusive INDIA, they are trying to create a ‘HINDIA’. Why forcefully fix something that isn’t broken? There is no need to interfere with a functioning democracy time and again. Any form of delimitation will ultimately harm non-Hindi-speaking states. This unnecessary move threatens the federal structure of India,” the South First quotes as actor is saying.

The Parliamentary constituency delimitation process expected to take place in 2026. The all-party meeting headed by DMK supremo and chief minister M. K. Stalin has unanimously dismissed the delimitation process and proposed a resolution that if Centre plans to proceed with the delimitation exercise it should be based on the 1971 Census from 2026 to the next 30 years.

The resolution read, “It is entirely unjustifiable to reduce parliamentary representation of Tamil Nadu and other south Indian states solely because they have proactively implemented population control measures in the national interest.”
