On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University in Rajgir, around 20 km away from the ancient ruins of the university. PM Modi unveiled a plaque at the new campus and planted a sapling as part of the inauguration.

He was accompanied by ambassadors from 17 countries, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Union Minister for External Affairs Dr. S. Jaishankar. He shared his vision of making India a global center for education.

Speaking at the event, PM Modi described Nalanda as a “symbol of India’s academic heritage and vibrant cultural exchange.”

Sharing the news, PM Modi took to X (formerly known as Twitter) and said, “It’s a very special day for our education sector. At around 10:30 AM today, the new campus of the Nalanda University would be inaugurated at Rajgir. Nalanda has a strong connect with our glorious part. This university will surely go a long way in catering to the educational needs of the youth.”

With over 40 classrooms, a 2000-seater amphitheatre, two 300-seat auditoriums, a hostel for roughly 550 students, an international centre, and a sports complex, the university hosts students and faculty members from different countries.

The ‘Net Zero’ Green campus is self-sustaining with a water recycling plant, domestic and drinking water treatment plants, solar plants, water bodies spanning 100 acres, and more.

Named after the ancient university that is known to have attracted scholars from across the globe over 1,600 years ago, the university was founded in the fifth century. Former president Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam passed a bill to build the foundation for the new university in 2007.

The university was created in 2010 on the government allotted land of 455 acres. In 2016, former President Pranab Mukherjee laid the foundation stone for the permanent campus in Rajgir, and construction for the new campus began in 2017.
