Tarn Taran, Punjab: On Tuesday, Punjab Police arrested a man from Tarn Taran for sharing classified information with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The conspiracy was uncovered as part of the nationwide crackdown on espionage in the wake of the recent Pahalgam terror attack and the resultant Operation Sindoor, launched by India against Pakistan-based terror operatives.

The Tarn Taran resident was reportedly sharing sensitive information about army movements during Operation Sindoor. According to Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, the accused had been in contact with Pakistan’s ISI and shared information including troop deployment and strategic locations.

The accused reportedly collaborated with Gopal Singh Chawla, a prominent Khalistani leader in Pakistan, who is allegedly operating under the direct command of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Gaurav Yadav, said the accused has been identified as Gagandeep Singh alias Gagan, who has been in contact with Chawla and used to share sensitive information concerning army movements during Operation Indoor, highlighting that Chawla has been consistently vocal in his anti-India rhetoric.

Chawla has reportedly been a key figure in leading anti-India demonstrations and is believed to be tasked by the ISI with identifying ‘soft targets’ among Indian Sikh jathas visiting Pakistan on religious occasions. Chawla also has close links with Hafiz Saeed, the founder of Jamaat-ud-Dawa and the mastermind behind the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, as the duo had photographs together.

Police have recovered a mobile phone containing intelligence that he shared with the PIOs, as well as the details of over 20 ISI contacts. A thorough investigation is underway into the financial and technical aspects of the case to track the espionage networks and probe any other links. Jalandhar police arrested one Harpal Singh Pala in 2019 for allegedly being in touch with Chawla and sharing strategic information with the ISI agents.

In the past few days, following Operation Sindoor, police have arrested several people for espionage.
