Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday and has urged to allocate Rs 2000 crore from the National Disaster Relief Fund to enhance the ongoing rescue operations in Tamil Nadu and restore vital infrastructure which has been damaged in the incessant rainfall.
Two days of continuous rainfall in the state has brought the region to standstill leaving individuals, families and a trainload of people stranded for days. The unprecedented rain has also claimed the lives of 10 during these two days.
CM Stalin in the memorandum submitted to Modi in Delhi, stated that immediate relied would facilitate livelihood assistance for those affected and address temporary rehabilitation efforts in district such as Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari, and Tenkasi.
“While a comprehensive assessment of the permanent damage will take time, we request an interim assistance of ₹2,000 crore from the NDRF (National Disaster Relief Fund) to bolster the ongoing efforts for livelihood support and repairs and restoration of the public infrastructure battered by the unprecedented floods,” MK Stalin said in the memorandum.

Additionally, Stalin has urged the Prime Minister to declare the damage caused by the rain in the four southern districts, a phenomenon occurring for the first time in century as a national calamity. He has also appealed for the prompt allocation of funds to address the destruction caused in Chennai and other areas due to Cyclone Michaung, reports livemint.
Meanwhile, Indian Army and Indian Air Force (IAF) is carrying out relied operations in the affected regions. On Tuesday, IAF has delivered more than 10 tonnes of relief supplies and conducted evacuations to rescue individuals stranded in remote regions.
“The Celebration of Advent Christmas” which was scheduled to be held on December 21 in Tamil Nadu was called off by the Governor RN Ravi due to intense rainfall and flooding.
