Villupuram, Tamil Nadu: Five coaches of passenger train MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Uni) have been derailed near Villupuram on Tuesday. Preventing major accident and casualties, the loco pilot quickly noticed the derailment when he heard a loud noise and halted the train.
The train was bound for Puducherry from Villupuram and had around 500 passengers on board. The derailment occurred soon after its departure from Villupuram at morning 5.25, and the train was crossing a curve. According to reports, no one was injured and the traffic has been restored within three hours. The MEMU is a short-distance train covering only few kilometers.

The incident had led to the disruption of train services in the Villupuram route till 8.30 am.

Railway staff said that all passengers were safely evacuated from the train, adding that the staff and engineers have been rushed to the site for the active repair works for the restoration of service. The route has been cleared for other trains to pass. The Villupuram Railway Police have begun a comprehensive inquiry into the incident. There have been multiple train derailments reported across the country in the recent times, creating a sense of insecurity among the passengers.
