Udaipur Royal Family Clash: Dispute Over The City Palace Entry Leaves 3 Injured

Udaipur, Rajasthan: The royal city of Rajasthan, Udaipur, witnessed a clash on Monday regarding a dispute over the royal family feud in Chittorgarh, following recently anointed head Vishvaraj Singh’s attempt to enter the City Palace. The violence led to heavy police deployment and the injury of at least three people.

Singh, also a BJP MLA, was recently anointed as the titular head of the Mewar royal family following the death of his father, Mahendra Singh Mewar, earlier this year. According to the tradition, Singh planned a visit to the City Palace to offer prayer at different family temples at the site.

Notably, as Singh reached the spot, Arvind Singh Mewar, Vishvaraj Singh’s cousin, who currently controls the City Palace and its religious sites, denied entry to the BJP MLA. Arvind Singh also issued public notices warning of legal action against any trespassing via his lawyer. Udaipur was the capital of the Mewar kingdom for many centuries.

The situation went out of control when the supporters of the MLA began to arrive at the City Palace. As Singh waited a few feet away from the gates, his supporters rushed to the gate and attempted to break the police barricades placed in front of the Palace. Then a clash erupted between the police and the protesters, leading to the injury of several people.

The coronation ceremony of Vishvaraj Singh after being anointed as the head of the erstwhile royal family in Chittorgarh Fort was held on Monday morning. The ceremony was overshadowed by the feud between Mahendra Singh Mewar and his alienated younger brother, Arvind Singh Mewar.

At present, both the temple and the palace are under the control of Arvind Singh, who is the chairman and managing trustee of Shree Eklingji Trust in Udaipur. The trust managing City Palace on Monday issued two public notices, stating that Vishvaraj Singh was not a member of the trust and that any unauthorised individuals would not be allowed into the palace museum on Monday for security reasons.

The blockade of the BJP leader’s visit to the Eklingnath temple of the family deity and the City Palace in Udaipur as part of rituals escalated to throne pelting from both sides.

Though the senior police officials, Udaipur’s District Magistrate Arvind Poswal and SP Yogesh Goyal, spoke to Vishvaraj Singh and his supporters to find a solution, the issue remained unresolved. The police have, however, stated that the situation is now under control.
