Deoria, Uttar Pradesh: Students and staff at Mahamrishi Devaraha Baba Medical College in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria reportedly drank waste that contained a dead body for 10 days.

The grim horror was discovered when a foul odor from the water prompted cleaning staff to look into the cemented tank on the fifth floor. The cleaning staff was surprised to find an unidentified, decomposed body. The body was later removed in the police presence and sent for post-mortem examination, reports India Today.

Much to the panic of the students and staff who had been using water from the tank, college authorities have confirmed that water from the tank had been supplied to both the OPD and ward buildings during the period. Following the incident, college principal, Dr. Rajesh Kumar Barnwal, has been suspended, and Dr. Rajni, head of the Anatomy Department at Etah Medical College, has been made acting principal until further notice.

The preliminary investigation has found that the tank, which was supposed to remain locked, had been left open. The police have questioned the principal over the alleged lapse since the video of the tank which was seen left open went viral on social media. It is yet to be known how the body ended up in the tank.

Deoria District Magistrate Divya Mittal was appointed as the investigation officer to investigate the case. A five-member inquiry committee, headed by the Chief Development Officer, has been formed and directed to submit a report within two days. Officials have sealed the contaminated tank and arranged an alternative water supply through tankers.
