A 53-year-old woman who had filed a complaint against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa for allegedly sexually assaulting her 17-year-old daughter, passed away on May 26. She had reportedly taken an appointment to meet the BJP leader on May 27.

Senior lawyer S Balan, her representative, called her death suspicious. Calling it “the state’s duty,” he urged the police to conduct a post-mortem. Balan said that the woman had approached the lawyer for help in the sexual assault case and was scheduled to meet him at 5:30 pm on Sunday. On that afternoon, however, the human rights activist received the news of her passing. Balan claimed that he was informed that the woman’s body had been taken out of the hospital’s backdoor, as stated by The News Minute.

Balan has previously dealt with high-profile cases like when he was the Special Public Prosecutor in the Gauri Lankesh assassination case.

Dr. Mohan MR, Medical Doctor at Nano Hospital, informed the media that the woman had been brought in at 8:30 pm by her daughter, complaining of severe breathing issues. Her son, who had reportedly abandoned her, also arrived. She had been undergoing treatment for kidney issues and lung cancer for the past eight years and one and half years, respectively. The doctor added that despite efforts to resuscitate her by the emergency and ICU doctors, the woman passed away at 9:30 pm.

After which, the son and the woman’s brother took her body from the hospital without allowing an autopsy to be conducted.

On March 14, the 53-year-old had filed a complaint accusing Yediyurappa of sexually assaulting her minor daughter at his Bengaluru residence when the two had visited him to seek help. A case had been registered at the Sadashivanagar police station under section 8 (sexual assault) of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and section 354A (assaults or uses criminal force to any woman) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
