At Least 4 Killed, Several Missing As Massive Landslide Hits Kerala's Wayanad
Wayanad, Kerala: Two year after the tragic landslide killed over 350 and obliterated an entire village, another massive landslide struck near a tunnel construction site in Kerala’s Wayanad on Tuesday, July 7.
The incident occurred near Meenakshi Bridge, where work on the Anakkampoyil-Kalladi-Meppadi twin tunnel project is under way. At least four people have lost their lives and several are still reported missing. Rescue operation is underway to trace the missing people. The landslide struck as the district has been battered by extreme rainfall over the past few days. The area appears to be vulnerable as it is located closer to Mundakkai, which was the worst hit in the 2024 landslides.

The area received around 265 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours – the highest rainfall recorded this season, as per the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA).
At least six labourers were injured in the incident. Rescue team have rushed to the spot, and along with locals, pulled people to safety. Videos from the site shows thick slush barrelling down the hillside, uprooting trees on its way as people were running for their lives.

Chief Minister VD Satheesan held an emergency meeting. Kerala Agriculture Minister Siddique and Revenue Minister AP Anil Kumar have been sent to Wayanad to coordinate the rescue operations. Calling the incident a man-made landslide, Siddique said stated it is a clear case of lapse, noting that it occurred due to an unscientific way of accumulating mud there.
