Kerala: Award-Winning Farmer Ambattu Elias Allegedly Dies By Suicide Over Debt
Kannur, Kerala: Ambattu Elias, an award-winning farmer from Kerala’s Kannur, has allegedly diedby suicide. The farmer reportedly consumed pesticide, leading to his death.
The 62-year-old Elias, who cultivated vegetables on leased land for decades, was reportedly struggling due to mounting financial debt. As per reports, Elias’ income this season did not match the yield from 2,500 banana saplings.

The farmer reportedly had financial liabilities worth several lakhs of rupees, which is suspected to have led him to end his life. He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the district. He had spent nearly 40 years farming vegetables on leased land in the hilly areas of Kannur and the nearby Kasaragod district.
The loss in his banana business due to poor harvest and low market value left him under intense financial pressure. Elias was famous in his village for being a very hardworking and creative farmer who tried new methods and crops. His dedication had earned him recognition and awards over the years.
Despite all the public recognition and praise, the farmer struggled to survive this season duo the unpredictable market decline, lack of financial assistance, loan facilities and mental health care.
