After Home Minister Amit Shah claimed that early warnings were given to the Kerala government seven days ahead of the Wayanad landslides, netizens on X fact checked him, stating that there was no red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) during the time period.
Addressing the Rajya Sabha yesterday, Shah claimed that early warnings had been given to the state government on July 23 and July 24, a week before the devastating landslides struck Kerala’s Wayanad district.

Following his statement, several people pointed out that Wayanad had received 572mm within 48 hours since July 29, a day before the disaster struck, but only an orange alert was issued that day. Prior to that, users highlighted that the IMD did not declare a red alert for the district between July 23 and July 30.
Hello @AmitShah,
You said in the parliament that you had given advance warning 7 days ago, well this is the weather update from Indian Metrological Dept a day before the landslide in Wayanad. Not even a red alert.

A user by the name of Advaidism highlighted that the Geological Survey of India (GSI) also failed to release any warnings for the state for July 29 and 30. Sharing images of IMD warnings for Kerala from July 23 to July 29, the netizen observed that there were no red alerts for Wayanad between these dates except an orange alert on July 29.
WRONG.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) did not declare a red alert for Wayanad district from July 23rd to July 30th.

Notably, red and orange alerts are considered to be danger alerts.
The user noted how the GSI did not release any warnings for landslides in Wayanad on July 29 or July 30. Instead, on both days, the agency issued a “low possibility” of a landslide in the region.

Another user stated that there was no red alert and not even a low likelihood prediction of landslides. “While the predicted rainfall was between 65 and 100 mm, the actual rainfall Wayanad, Kerala, received was 572 mm.
Stop spreading lies Mr. Amit Shah!
