Viral Video: A Garland Of Communal Harmony From Kerala Milad-un-Nabi Celebration

Kerala style of Milad-un-Nabi celebration.

Kerala”s Mild-un-Nabi celebration is an awe-inducing one. This year – as every year – not only Muslims but non-Muslims were also part of the celebration. From welcoming the Milad-un-Nabi rally with warm smiles, drinks and sweets to making space for the children to perform in front of the temple, Kerala stood true to its secular identity.

One such heart-warming scene that filled many hearts is when Ms Sheena has gifted a garland of money to one of the child in the rally that passed through her native place, Valiyad, Malappuram.

Ms Sheena prepared the note garland, waited patiently for the rain to pace down, and wear the garland to the “kid” and placed a lovely kiss on his cheek. Video of this has gone viral. Upon asking what prompted her to do so, Ms Sheena could not comprehend what is the big deal in it. She said, “I used to participate in the rally, its our community, we grew up like that”. Though she did not know to whom she was giving the garland, later realised it was her neighbour Hadi Shami.

Kerala always stood “sanitised” of the malicious communal hatred that looms above India considering the current political climate. When Ms Sheena was asked what was the response she got after the video went viral, she said, “It (the communal hatred) did not reach us. We have been like this…..my mother taught me like this…..these are our kids”.

Hadi Shami did not know who was going to give him the garland. He said he received four such garlands and gave it to the Madrasa.

Not only Mrs. Sheena, from small kids to old nanny who gave away sweets for her Muslim kids which she brought wrapped in her clothing, everyone celebrated the Milad-un-Nabi in Kerala, in ‘Kerala style’ of celebrating every festivals.
