Yemen's Public Prosecutor Orders Nimisha Priya's Execution On July 16; Final Hope On 'Blood Money'

Sana’a, Yemen: Malayali nurse Nimisha Priya, who has been in jail in Yemen since 2018, and facing death row, is to be hanged on July 16, as per the order given by the gulf nation’s public prosecutor. A resident of Kollengode in Kerala’s Palakkad district, Nimisha Priya was convicted in 2017 for murdering Yemeni citizen Talal Abdo Mehdi.

The Indian nurse was sentenced to death in 2020, and her mercy appeals to Yemen’s Supreme Judicial Council were rejected in November 2023.

According to Samuel Jerome, a human rights activist, who holds the power of attorney of Nimisha Priya’s mother, Prema Kumari, the execution order has been passed and confirmed. He said the date of her execution was also communicated by the prison authorities. India’s External Affair Minister has also been informed about the execution order. There were negotiations regarding blood money with the deceased’s family.

What Is Nimisha Priya’s Case In Yemen?

After arriving in Yemen in 2011, Nimisha Priya started a clinic in 2015 under the sponsorship of Talal. Her husband and child returned to India in 2014 due to financial issues. After that, Talal allegedly subjected her to sustained physical and mental after claiming he married her submitting alleged forged documents.

He also  reportedly seized her passport, and extorted money using threats. To escape the harassment, Nimisha tried to drug Talal to take back her passport, but the man died during the attempt.
