Being the former MLA of the saffron party and the executive member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) made a shift to the congress party as he resigned from the Assam state executive committee and the membership of BJP.

Joyram Engleng had long ties with the saffron party as he was the first politician from Karbi Anglong to join the BJP. But he chopped his ties with the party as he filed his resignation letter to the state party president Bhabesh Kalita on May 5. He joined the Congress at a function in Diphu at Karbi Anglong in Assam.

Looking into his political tenure in BJP, in  2014 Joyram contested in the Lok Sabha election on BJP ticket in the Diphu constituency and lost to the Congress candidate Biren Singh Ingti.

He had won the Howraghat constituency in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district in the 2016 Assembly elections by a margin of 6,391 votes. But in the 2019 state Assembly elections, BJP had given the ticket to Darsing Ronghang, who won the assembly seat by over 20,000 votes.

However, his political career witnessed an abrupt change through his resignation from the saffron party and joining the grand old party. In his resignation letter to the BJP, he stated his decision to quit the party was due to the ongoing odd situation arising all over the society. “In the greater interest of the national integrity, peace, and development I am quitting the BJP party,” he wrote. While the reason for Engleng’s exit from the BJP is yet to be established, sources say that he may have quit the saffron party as he did not receive a ticket to contest in the 2019 assembly polls.
