In Bapatla, TDP candidate Krishna Prasad is leading with a huge majority of 98,323 votes. The sitting MP, YSRCP’s Nandigam Suresh is trailing behind with 2,80,549 votes. Congress does not seem to have luck this year too.

It has always been a tug of war between Indian National Congress and Telugu Desam party (TDP) in Andhra Pradesh’s Bapatla Lok Sabah constituency since the beginning. Congress won the seat six times and TDP won five times. Since 2014 Lok Sabah election, YSRCP (Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress Party) has joined the battleground giving tough competition to the old players. The party won the seat in 2019 Lok Sabha election.

YSRCP’s Nandigam Suresh is the sitting MP of Bapatla. Suresh comes from a poor family background and is a banana farmer. He was not confident in his candidature in 2019, but went forward at the behest of party chief Jagan Mohan Reddy. His victory grabbed attention, as was an MP who holds a BPL (Below Poverty Line) card, which is a rare distinction in Indian politics.

TDP has fielded Krishna Prasad Tenneti, a former IPS officer. This is the first time Tenneti is contesting for in an election.

The Indian National Congress has been trying hard to get back the seat since 2014. Though it did not field anyone in the 2019 Lok Sabah election, this year showed confidence in Jesudasu Seelam. He is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer turned politician. He joined Congress in 1999, after voluntary retirement. In 2004, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha.
