Amritpal Singh Khalsa, an independent candidate, clinched the Khadoor Sahib seat with an impressive margin of 197,120 votes, gaining 404,430 votes out of the total 1,047,165 votes in the Lok Sabha Election 2024. Singh’s victory was made being the highest-margin win in Punjab. His competent Congress leader Kulbir Singh Zira, trailed significantly with 207,310 votes.
Amritpal Singh, 31, led a campaign focused on Punjab’s drug crisis, the release of former Sikh militants from jail, and the protection of Sikh identity. His father, Tarsem Singh, spearheaded his campaign and was supported by local followers. Posters depicting Singh with swords and bulletproof vests adorned the streets, symbolizing his strong stance on Sikh issues.
Singh’s rise to prominence was marked by his leadership of Waris Punjab De, a group advocating for Sikh rights. He gained significant attention following an incident in February 2023, when he and his supporters stormed a police station in Amritsar after one of his aides was arrested. This led to a police crackdown on Waris Punjab De members. Later Amritpal Singh was arrested and charged under the National Security Act (NSA). He is currently imprisoned in Dibrugarh, Assam.
Despite his incarceration, Singh’s campaign and his arrest made people vote for him, reflecting his influence and the enduring appeal of his message among Punjab’s youth and the Sikh community. His speeches on various social issues and grassroots campaigns, as well as dissatisfaction with other parties, subsequently helped him garner votes in the Khadoor Sahib constituency in Punjab.
According to the reports, people cast their votes believing that this social responsibility would benefit them, helping them to evolve in every sector and eradicate social issues and menaces like drugs from society.
