West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today proposed the name of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge as the Prime ministerial candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha election. She had on Monday said that the INDIA bloc will decide on its Prime Ministerial candidate after the Lok Sabha election.
Mamata proposed the matter at the ongoing meeting of the INDIA bloc, and the plan to make Kharge as the Prime Ministerial face was greeted with applause by twelve parties participating in the meeting, according to NDTV reports.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also supported Mamata’s proposal saying: “This is a chance to have the country’s first Dalit Prime Minister,” sources quoted him as per the reports.
The BJP had accused the Congress of being anti-Dalit and Tribal when it fielded candidates against Ramnath Kovind and Draupadi Murmu in the presidential elections.
However, Kharge, not responding to the proposal, said that he only wanted to work for the downtrodden. When Kharge was asked about the matter later, he said to reporters: “We have to win first and think what to do to win. What is the point of discussing PM before having MPs? We will try to get a majority together.”
A total of 28 parties participated in today”s INDIA bloc meet, and the block is going to conduct multiple meets across cities.
The development, however turned out to be an ignore of Rahul Gandhi, whose name has been a continuous discussion. On the other hand, the acceptance that Kharge is getting among the opposition parties is reflected in today’s development.
