Will NCP(SP)'s Supriya Sule Retain Baramati?

The constituency in the Pune district was keenly watched during the Lok Sabha polls as the two members fielded are from the influential Pawar family are contesting against each other. The early trend from the constituency reveals sitting NCP(SP) MP Supriya Sule taking a lead with 40,398 votes. Supriya Sule was fielded up against her sister-in-law Sunetra Pawar, the wife of Maharashtra Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar. This election is significant as it marks the first time that Sharad Pawar faces a direct challenge after the BJP engineered split.

Sharad Pawar’s daughter and sitting MP Supriya Sule and nephew Ajit Pawar’s wife Sunetra Pawar was pitted against each other by the two factions of the Nationalist Congress Party.

MP Supriye Sule is seeking a fourth term to the Lower House of Parliament. Growing up in a politically charged environment, she imbibed a deep understanding of public and political affairs from an early age. She was first elected to the Parliament unopposed to Rajya Sabha in 2006.

Sunetra Pawar is an office-bearer of various educational and industry bodies and has been active in the social sphere of Baramati. She is contesting her maiden Lok Sabha election.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, Supriya Sule won the seat for the second time. Despite the Modi wave, the Pawar’s family influence in the constituency remained intact. She received 5,21,562 votes. RSP’s Mahadev Jankar came second with 4,51,843 votes.

In the 2019 election, Supriya once again retained the seat by securing 6,86,714 votes. BJP candidate Kanchan Rahul Kul came second with 5,30,940 votes.
