The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) announced on Wednesday that the newly developed Terminal 1 at Indira Gandhi international airport will be operational from August 17. However, the old building, which was closed following a canopy collapse incident, will remain shut.

The terminal was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 10.

With Terminal 1 opening, the pressure on Terminals 2 and 3 is expected to be relieved. IndiGo will transfer 34 flights, while SpiceJet will shift 13 flights from Terminals 2 and 3 to the new terminal from September 2.

CEO-DIAL Videh Kumar Jaipuriar added, “Delhi Airport is glad to announce the operationalisation of new Terminal 1 from August 17, 2024. The state-of-the-art Terminal 1 will significantly boost our capacity, easing pressure on Terminals 2 and 3. Passengers can expect a smoother travel experience with improved amenities and advanced technology.”

Terminal 1 is connected with Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line and provides regular bus services operated by the Delhi Traffic Corporation (DTC). A shuttle service will also connect terminals 1, 2, and 3.

Expanded parking facilities and realigned pickup and drop-off lanes will streamline vehicle traffic.

On June 28, the Delhi airport’s Terminal 1 roof collapsed due to heavy rain, killing three people and leaving at least eight injured. Following the incident, all flight departures from Terminal 1, which operates only domestic flights, were suspended as a safety measure. All departing flights of IndiGo and SpiceJet from T1 were also cancelled.

Leaders from the opposition blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for hastily inaugurating the terminal ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
