Nilesh Rai, a 26-year-old civil service aspirant lost his life due to electrocution near the Patel Nagar metro station in Delhi. The incident happened on July 22 afternoon when he touched an iron gate where electric current was running on it following heavy rains in the area, according to police reports.

According to police at Ranjit Nagar police station, at 2.43 pm on Monday they received the information that a man was electrocuted near Power Gym, close to Patel Nagar metro station.

After reaching the spot, it was found that the man was electrocuted after he touched the iron gate on the waterlogged road, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) M Harsha Vardhan said.

“The victim was taken to RML Hospital, where he was declared dead by the doctors,” police said.

A case has been registered at the Ranjit Nagar Police Station under Section 106(1) of the 285 BNS. Forensic teams have visited the spot and investigation is currently progressing.

Nilesh Rai’s family comprise father, mother and two sisters. Atul Dua, owner of Nilesh Rai’s PG told NDTV that he had been living in the PG for the last three years and was preparing for the civil services.

Condemning the incident, AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal wrote on X: “This is not an accident, it is a murder caused by the failure of the government system.”
