Following the convention, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today made his 11th Independence Day speech from the ramparts of Red Fort after hoisting the Indian flag. Themed ‘Viksit Bharat @ 2047’ this year’s Independence Day is being celebrated by vowing the government’s commitment towards transforming the country into a developed nation by 2047.

Key Highlights From The Speech

  1. Addressing the country during the 78th Independence Day, Prime Minister Modi reminded that the nation is proud to carry the blood of 40 crore people who uprooted the colonial rule from India. “Today, we are 140 crore people, if we resolve and move together in one direction, then we can become ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047 by overcoming all obstacles in the way,” he added.
  2. Referring to the recent catastrophic landslides that hit Kerala’s Wayanad on July 30, the Prime Minister said that the people’s concerns have been increasing due to natural disasters over the last few years. The massive landslides claimed more than 400 lives. In addition, many lives were lost in landslides, flash flooding and other natural calamities across the country in recent times.
  3. During his speech, the Prime Minister put forth the ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ dream, calling for making the country the third-largest economy in the world. He also stressed the government’s focus on reforms in several key areas including the banking sector and skill development. “We need to promote reforms in governance in order to achieve the dream of Viksit Bharat in 2047. So that, there are no hurdles in the lives of common people… Delivery system in the governance needs more strengthening,” he said, underscoring that the reform should not be constrained to editorial pieces.

Addressing the nation, the Prime Minister then spoke of his dream of building such an education system in the country that students don’t have to go abroad for studies. he also promised that in the next five years,  75,000 new seats will be created in medical colleges in India. “Viksit Bharat 2047 should also be ‘Swasth Bharat’ and for this, we have started Rashtriya Poshan Mission,” added the Prime Minister.

In his first remark on the horrific Kolkata doctor trainee’s rape and murder that sent shockwaves across the country, the Prime Minister expressed his pain, emphasising that the country has to think seriously about the atrocities against women. “There is outrage against this in the country. I can feel this outrage. The country, society, and State Governments will have to take this seriously,” the Prime Minister said, stressing the importance of speedy investigation and early punishment. The Prime Minister also claimed that when rapes and incidents of atrocities on women occur, it is widely discussed, but when a person of such monstrous tendency is punished, it is not seen in the news, adding that extensive discussion on punishments being given should be done to instill fear among the perpetrators.

Praising the country’s athlete’s performance on behalf of 140 crore Indians on the backdrop of the Olympic 2024, the Prime Minister said the country has with it the youth who made its flag fly high in Paris. “In the next few days, a huge contingent of India will leave for Paris to participate in the Paralympics. I extend best wishes to all our Paralympians,” the Prime Minister said, stating that it is India’s dream to host the 2036 Olympics with a lot of preparation being made for that.

Referring to the political upheaval in Bangladesh, the Prime Minister said that he can understand the concern regarding whatever has happened in the neighbouring country while expressing his hope to restore normalcy at the earliest. Regarding the reports of Hindus and minorities being attacked, the Prime Minister said that it is the concern of the 140 crore Indians to ensure their safety. “India always wants our neighbouring countries to walk the path of prosperity and peace,” the Prime Minister said.
  8. The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of transformation in the agricultural sector, saying that the government is making comprehensive efforts to make the lives of farmers better and that it is the need of the hour.
  9. With regard to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the Prime Minister said the Supreme Court had held discussions regarding the topic and has given orders several times, claiming that a large section of the country believes that the Civil Code that we are living with is actually a Communal Civil Code in a way. “I would say that it is the need of the hour to that there be a Secular Civil Code in the country,” the Prime Minister said, arguing that only then we would be free of discrimination on the basis of religion.
  10. Regarding infrastructure development, the Prime Minister said that India has developed railways, roads, schools, hospitals, colleges, fibre networks, pucca houses, and development of the northeast. “We have reached every corner of India. We have reached Dalits, Adivasis, disabled, we have reached everyone,” he said adding that people do not need to beg for government services now and the facilities will reach their homes.
