In his longest-ever Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today spoke about various topics, including Vikasit Bharat, reforms, natural disasters, sports, and development, among others. Against the backdrop of the horrific Kolkata rape and murder incident that shocked the country, the Prime Minister expressed his concern over the safety of women, emphasising the importance of instilling fear among the culprits.

Referring to the Prime Minister’s speech and the concern that he expressed about the safety of women, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi today questioned the commitment of the ruling party towards ensuring the security of women in the country.

In a post on X, the Hyderabad MP said that the Prime Minister’s government approved the release of Bilkis Bano’s rapists and murderers of her family. During the 2002 Gujarat riot, when the Prime Minister was the then chief minister of state, Bilqis Bano was gang-raped while her family members were killed in front of her. The Union government had approved the release of the 11 convicts in the case.

Owaisi further noted that the Prime Minister campaigned for a candidate in Karnataka who is accused of the “most heinous crimes against thousands of women,” emphasising that the BJP’s high command reportedly knew of these crimes much before they were made public. He was referring to former Hassan MP and JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna who was arrested by the police after a video showed him sexually abusing several women.

“If the Prime Minister himself doesn’t take women’s safety seriously, then how can we expect social change? When the ruling party releases convicted rapists, and they’re garlanded on their release, what’s the message going to criminals?,” the AIMIM leader asked.

During his independence day speech, the Prime Minister talked about the importance of thinking seriously about the atrocities against women. Acknowledging that there is outrage against this in the country, he said that he can feel the anger, adding that speedy investigation of crimes against women must be done.

“This is important to instil confidence in society. I would also like to say that when rapes and incidents of atrocities on women occur, it is widely discussed. But when a person of such monstrous tendency is punished, it is not seen in news, but restricted to a corner. It is the need of the hour, that extensive discussion on those receiving punishment be held so that those committing this sin understand that this leads to hanging. I think it is very important to instil this fear,” the Prime Minister added.
