Sikkim: The Union Minister of Husbandry and Fisheries, Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, launched India’s first organic fisheries cluster in Sikkim on Tuesday. The cluster will help Sikkim, the country’s first organic farming state, to become a pioneer in sustainable aquaculture.
The organic fisheries cluster will focus on an ecologically healthy fish farming system that will be free of harmful chemicals, antibiotics, and pesticides.

In a statement, Singh explained how these features will help tap into the global eco-conscious markets with the appropriate support of financial and technical assistance from NABARD.
The Sikkim government has adopted organic farming, which has helped in building a strong reputation for sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices.

Organic clusters will ensure minimal environmental pollution and prevent damage to aquatic ecosystems. They contribute sustainable fish production practices.
Singh also explained that organic products typically attract a premium in both domestic and international markets. With the first organic aquaculture established, the state could tap into the growing market and export of organic fish and fish products.

In India, the fisheries and aquaculture sector play a critical role as it provides livelihoods to approximately 3 crore fishers and fish farmers. Notably, India is the second-largest fish producer, contributing 8 percent to global output. The country ranks second in aquaculture production and leads in the production and export of shrimp.
