UP: Muslim Teacher Suspended For Alleged Objectionable Post On Pahalgam Attack

Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh:  A female teacher from Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra district has been suspended from her position at a government primary school for alleged “objectionable remarks” on the recent Pahalgam attack and the Navy official who was killed by terrorists.

The department found one of her social media posts as indecent and against the integrity of the teaching profession, and the remark was considered inappropriate and in violation of conduct rules.

In a statement declaring her suspension, Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) Mukul Anand Pandey said that Zeba Afroz has made communal and controversial comments on the social media platform (Facebook) regarding the Pulwama terrorist attack.

The suspension order issued by the Office of the District Basic Education Officer, Sonbhadra said that “Mrs. Zeba Afroz, Teacher at Primary School Maloghat Chopan, Sonbhadra, is hereby suspended with immediate effect, noting that the comments made by the teacher on social media were in violation of the Uttar Pradesh Government Servant Conduct Rules, 1966, and the dignity of the teaching profession.

Notably, there is also a report that Zeba was targeted for extending her support to the Pahalgam survivor, Himanshi, the wife of Navy Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, leading to her suspension. Himanshi faced online bullying since she appealed to people not to target Muslims and Kashmiris in India.

Extending supporting to Himanshi, Zeba Afroz posted on her social media platform Facebook that “such disgusting and low-level thinking is emerging,” referring to those who are indulged in hurling abuses, reports Maktoob media.

The widow had said, “we don’t want people going after Muslims or Kashmiris. We want peace, only peace. Of course we want justice. The people who have wronged should be punished.” The remarks triggered hatemongers, who accused the survivor of showing love to Muslims. It was also considered by many as a slap to the right-wing forces.

The remark sparked outrage by certain Hindutva handlers, accusing her of communal and objectionable comments, thus leading to her suspension.

The teacher is also accused of posting a remark regarding the murder of a Muslim man, Gulfam, in Agra, for allegedly highlighting the communal angle in the murder case, which the police dismissed. In her post, Zeba stated that all the accused in the killing of Gulfam in Agra have been arrested in a police encounter, and the case was manipulated, making it a case of killing over money dealings.

“The accused, who had publicly instigated the murder of 26 other Muslims, were given a clean chit by a terrorist group, and the law has done its work. If the case’s details were opened, it would expose high-ranking terrorists linked to this organization, and one day, society would honor those accused with flower petals and garlands,” the news portal quoted the teacher as she wrote on  her Facebook page.

The Hindutva handles claimed these comments were “communal” and “objectionable,” leading to disciplinary action.
