When yesterday’s match finished, Mumbai Indians (MI) not only sealed their first win in this IPL season, but also celebrated master class of a debutant. After losing their first two matches, Mumbai Indians thrashed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 8 wickets after their bowlers dismantled them for just 116 runs inside 17 overs. It was debutant Aswani Kumar who led the attack through (KKR) batters by his record breaking 4/24 which grabbed the headlines and also highlighted the scouting success of the MI.

The spell was the best one for an Indian debutant in IPL history as the medium pace bowler joined the list of Alzzari Joseph and Andrew Tye who finished their debut matches for 6/12 and 5/17 respectively. Aswani wasted no time to make his mark in the big stage where he took his first wicket  in his very first ball and dismissed the big name, KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane. After coming back for his second and third overs, his remaining three wickets were of big fishes, Rinku Singh, Manish Pandey and Andre Russel giving KKR no way out. His blistering bowling acknowledged with Man of the Match was an icing on the cake, followed by MI’s easy chase of the target in their first home game of the season at Wankhede Stadium.

For this dream debut, the scouting team of MI must be lauded as they have a history of a great success in finding the seeds of cricketing talent over the years. The likes of today’s big names, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Tilak Warma and many have came into the limelight after their showdown for MI in IPL. Earlier this season as well, Vignesh Puthur, the left-arm wrist-spinner from Kerala had also grabbed the attention with a three wickets performance on his debut match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Aswani Kumar was bought by MI for the base price of INR 30 lakh in 2025 IPL auction. The 23-year- old bowler from Mohali have played a few matches in domestic cricket for his state team, Punjab. His performance during last year’s Sher-E-Punjab Trophy was noted by MI scouting team, especially his ability to bowl wide yorkers consistently. He was taken by Punjab Kings and CSK for IPL 2024 for bowling in the nets, but neither team came forward for him in this auction. Here, MI differs from other franchises in the scouting system because as they picked him in the auction they made him play his debut match which made a huge impact for both the team and him.

MI yet again proved that good results are not just relying solely on buying players in the auction but lot to do with scouting process as well. Here, they are not only focusing on the statistics and numbers of players but their unique skills and mental strength amid pressures. That’s what happened in the case of Aswani Kumar and Vignesh Puthur where the latter hadn’t played a single match for his state team, Kerala, but from a state league where he played for Aleppy Riffles.

MI has a huge investment on scouting which is operated across an year by closely monitoring players over the domestic tournaments as well as international. Their process is consisting of different stages starting with evaluation of young and upcoming players from domestic tournaments like Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. This evaluation is done by a team of great experts including former cricketers and talent scouts like Kiran More, Abey Kuruvila, TA Sekar, Parthiv Patel, and John Wright.

After this process the selected players will be analysed by data team of the franchise by going through their performances and studying aspects like strike rate, bowling variations, fitness levels, and mental strengths. After this section, shortlisting players will be invited to the training camps where they will be monitored again by head coach, Direct of Cricket Operations and senior players. Finally, they have to receive the approval of captain and owners in the last phase.

Such systematic process makes MI as one of the most successful teams in IPL history. The upcoming matches and seasons will definitely witness more talents from the franchise given their prolific past and promising future.
