The Board of Control For Cricket in India (BCCI) pays lucrative fees to its centrally contracted players. However, in recent times, former players like the 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev have said the Indian cricket board doesn”t pay a fair share of the amount they gain through media rights auction to the players.
Incidentally, as per a report in the Indian Express, the BCCI is considering hiking the salary of its centrally contracted players by putting a premium on the match fee of Tests, following their recent series win against England. The report also mentioned that the board has decided to redraft the salary structure after several players opted out of the Ranji Trophy to save themselves for the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Team India captain Rohit Sharma has also strictly made a point, hinting that the management will not pick up players, who are not hungry to feature in the longest format. “Jin logon ko bhookh hai, hum unhi logon ko mauka denge (We will give opportunities to only those who are hungry),” Rohit said.
“Agar hunger nahi hai to unko khila ke koi matlab nahi hai (There’s point in playing those who don’t have the hunger),” he said.
“I don’t see anyone in the team here who is not hungry. All the boys who are here and also those who are not, they all want to play. But the thing with Test cricket is that you get very few opportunities. If you don’t utilise them, they go away.”
