South Africa legend Shaun Pollock has weighed in on Suryakumar Yadav’s catch in the T20 World Cup 2024 final in Barbados which has stirred a massive controversy on social media off-late.
Needing 16 runs to win off the final over, South Africa’s David Miller hit a low full-toss from Team India all-rounder Hardik Pandya straight down the ground. It looked like the ball would cross the long-off for a maximum but Suryakumar appeared from nowhere to complete the catch. The reviews showed that Suryakumar had taken a clean catch and Miller was given out in the most game-changing moment.
However, days after the final, a few fans suggested that the boundary rope cushion had moved while Suryakumar completed the catch. Pollock gave his verdict on the matter.
“The catch was fine. The cushion had moved, but that’s in the course of the game. It had nothing to do with Surya. He didn’t stand on the cushion. Brilliant bit of skill,” Pollock said in a video posted by Times of Karachi.
Following the match, Suryakumar admitted that at one point it looked like the match was going out of Team India’s hands but he pulled back the match in their favor with the brilliant effort.
“Now it’s easy to say. But at that time, it felt like a trophy was sailing over the boundary to the other side. But yeah, in that moment, you don’t think the ball will cross the boundary line and go for six. Whatever was in my control, I tried it. And wind was also a good factor at that moment and helped me a little bit. And we have done a lot of practice sessions with our fielding coach and taken a lot of catches like this. So when it comes to a game like this, our presence of mind is very important,” said Suryakumar.
