The Royal Challengers of Bengaluru (RCB) are over with the Indian Premiere League (IPL) 2025 auction. Though the franchise had successfully bought in some top players including Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Phil Salt, Tim David, Liam Livingstone, Jitesh Sharma, etc, the team failed to bring in any captain candidate.
Rumors were suggesting that former RCB captain Virat Kohli will once again adorn the position. After stepping down from the post after 2021 season, the former Indian captain will now once again take up the role in the next season, RCB icon AB de Villiers has confirmed.
The prospect of Virat Kohli leading the franchise has reignited hopes among fans eager for their team to secure their maiden IPL title. De Villiers who is one of the greats of the game and who arguably enjoys the most prolific IPL stint with RCB and who is exposed to the inside talk of the franchise has given the hint of Virat Kohli’s return.
While speaking on his YouTube channel, De Villiers confirmed that Virat Kohli will take up RCB captaincy even though no official announcement has been made on the topic yet.
“Virat Kohli, I don’t think it has been confirmed yet but he will be captain looking at the squad,” said the South Africa great.
Being delighted to see Bhuvenshwar, Hazlewood, Lungi Ngidi on the squad, he said, “We got Bhuvneshwar Kumar, happy with Josh Hazlewood. We did miss out on a couple here and there. Rabada was close, but at least we got Lungi Ngidi. He’s got a wonderful slower ball, if he is in form and fit, he is a force to be reckoned with”.
However, the South African great had pointed out the lack of a match-winning spinner who can turn the ball both ways, a potential gap in the squad.
“We missed out on Ravichandran Ashwin. CSK got him, but very happy to see him in the yellow jersey again. But all in all, I’m fairly happy. It’s a well-balanced squad, we are missing a match-winning spinner but hopefully we are able to balance the squad in such a manner that we make Chinnaswamy a fortress. This squad should work at Chinnaswamy.”
