IBM, one of the biggest technology companies in the world, has signed three memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with the Government of India in the areas of semiconductors, quantum computing, and Artificial Intelligence. India made this move with the aim of developing the nation”s research and development efforts and upskilling its workforce in AI, semiconductors, and quantum sectors.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, said that these technologies will shape the future of technology. Rajeev Chandrasekhar also added that the MoUs with IBM represent tremendous opportunities for academia, startups, innovation ecosystems, and the broader opportunity of creating global standard talent. IBM mentioned in its statement that the new project aims to expand India’s comprehensive national strategy for AI, strengthen efforts to be self-reliant on semiconductors, and advance its National Quantum Mission. Sandip Patel, Managing Director, IBM India & South Asia, said that the new collaboration reinforces IBM”s commitment to being the trusted partner for India in strengthening its innovation capabilities.

IBM and Digital India Corporation are planning to establish a national AI Innovation Platform (AIIP) for India. It will mainly focus on AI skilling, ecosystem development, and integrating advanced foundation models and generative AI capabilities. AIIP will also serve as an accelerator for incubation and competency development in AI technologies. Under another MoU, IBM would be a knowledge partner of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) for a semiconductor research centre. IBM may also share its experience with ISM on intellectual property, tools, initiatives, and skill development. Through the third MoU, the company and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) will explore various opportunities for working together to assist in the advancement of India’s National Quantum Mission.
