India Inc Embraces Hybrid Work As The New Normal

Hybrid work models are becoming a permanent fixture in the corporate landscape in India. Companies such as Tech Mahindra, McCain, Mondelez, Nestle, and Mercedes Benz have not only adopted hybrid work setups but have also decided to make them a long-term part of their operations. Job postings for hybrid roles have also witnessed a significant increase in August compared to May. Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, and Chennai have emerged as the top five locations with the largest share of hybrid job opportunities, according to data from Xpheno.

Despite a gradual return to physical office spaces, several prominent companies are opting for hybrid work models. For instance, Apple has made three days a week in the office a permanent arrangement while offering one month of remote work per year. Mercedes-Benz tailors its work mode to employees” roles, allowing white-collar workers involved in remote collaboration to spend two to three days in the office and the rest working from home. McCain Foods has adopted a hybrid approach, requiring employees to be present in the office for 12 days each month. ITC still permits up to two days of remote work per week, depending on the role and manager”s approval.

Tech Mahindra has taken an even more flexible approach, allowing its employees to work from anywhere and engaging with gig workers. This adaptation to hybrid work models is mirrored in the job market, with job openings for hybrid roles surging by 40% from May to August, reaching a total of 42,000, according to Xpheno data. Hybrid job openings now constitute 15-18% of all active job opportunities, a significant increase from just 1% in May 2021, as reported by Kamal Karanth, Co-founder at Xpheno Specialist Staffing.

These full-time hybrid job openings are predominantly concentrated in major cities such as Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, and Chennai, which collectively account for 39% of total hybrid job opportunities, according to Xpheno data. The sectors leading the way in adopting hybrid work models include IT services, tech startups, telecommunications, software development, and banking.

The widespread adoption of flexible work arrangements represents a win-win situation. Employees gain greater control over their work-life balance, while companies can access a broader talent pool. The substantial increase in job openings for hybrid roles underscores the growing demand for this model and its integration into various industries.

As we navigate this evolving work landscape, it”s evident that the future of work is both promising and diverse. Let”s embrace the opportunities it presents and continue to innovate in this ever-changing work environment.
