Meta In Talks With Apple Over AI Partnership: Report

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Meta, Facebook’s parent company, has held discussions with longtime rival Apple about integrating Meta Platforms’ generative AI model into Apple Intelligence, which was recently announced for iPhones and other devices.

Apart from Meta, Google and AI startups including Perplexity and Anthropic have reportedly also been in discussions with Apple. These discussions, if finalised, could expand the distribution of these AI firms’ products through Apple. The WSJ emphasised that the talks are not finalised and could still fall through.

The financial implications of these potential deals remain unclear. However, the negotiations include the possibility of AI companies offering premium subscription services via Apple Intelligence.

The iPhone maker announced on Friday that the new features, including iPhone Mirroring, Apple Intelligence, and other enhancements to its screen-sharing product SharePlay, will not be released in the European Union (EU) in 2024 due to “regulatory uncertainties” from the bloc’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) antitrust regulation.

In 2023, the EU passed the DMA following concerns that major tech firms such as Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and others acted as “gatekeepers” in preventing smaller companies from competing. Additionally, the DMA also requires basic functionalities to work across devices and competing ecosystems.
