Dialogue, Diplomacy 'Essential': India Welcomes US-Iran Ceasefire, Expects Free Navigation Through Strait of Hormuz

India on Wednesday welcomed the ceasefire agreed between the US, Israel and Iran through the mediation of Pakistan. The country, while expressing hope for a lasting peace in West Asia, said India has been advocating for de-escalation in the region.

The official statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs said, “As we have continuously advocated earlier, de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy are essential to bring an early end to the ongoing conflict.”

India also expressed its hope that a smooth flow of commerce will happen through the Strait of Hormuz, as Iran agreed to open the Strait in the ceasefire deal. The statement pointed out that the conflict has already caused immense suffering to people and disrupted global energy supply and trade networks.

“We expect that unimpeded freedom of navigation and global flow of commerce will prevail through the Strait of Hormuz,” the statement added.
