EU Chief Calls Destruction In Gaza "Greater" Greater Than Germany During World War II; To Propose Sanctions Against Abusers

As the genocidal war in Gaza is raging on, with the death toll crossing 18,000 and humanitarian crisis at its peak, Josep Borrell, European Union’s Foreign Policy Chief calls the destruction in Gaza due to Israeli bombing “greater” than what Germany has went through during World War II.

He said, “the situation in Gaza is catastrophic, apocalyptic and proportionally the destruction is even greater than what Germany experienced in World War II”. He said he would propose sanction against Jewish settlers who are responsible for the violences against the Palestinians residing in the occupied West Bank.

While speaking to the reporters after the European Union (EU) foreign ministers’ debate on the possible next steps in their reactions to Middle East crisis that started on October 7th, Mr. Borrell said he would propose a special sanction against Hamas, which will be backed by Foreign Ministers of France, Germany and Italy, at the same time, the EU should also act against the violent settler attacks against the Palestinians in West Bank.

He added that, “the time has come to move from words to actions…and to start adopting the measure we can take with regard to the act of violence against the Palestinians population in the West Bank”.

He said, the foreign ministers have not showcased a unanimous support that would be necessary for passing the said sanctions and added that he had not submitted a formal proposal yet. He said, the European Union will first collect a list of those who are involved in the violent abuses against the Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. It is not clarified what the sanction will include but the EU officials said that it may include bans on travel to the European Union.

Diplomats of EU suggest that it would be hard to attain a EU-wide bans on travel as countries like Hungary, Austri and Czech Republic are strongest allies of Israel. Some others suggested that the decision taken by US, the biggest supporter of Israel, to impose visa ban, on those who are involved in the abuse in West Bank may encourage the countries included in EU to take similar steps.
