GCC Pledges For A 'Joint Defence Mechanism' During Arab-Islamic Emergency Summit

An emergency summit of Arab and Islamic countries was held in Doha after the Israeli attack on Hamas leaders in Qatar’s capital. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) pledged to ‘activate a joint defence mechanism’. However, nothing concrete came out of the emergency summit meeting.

The summit was opened by Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who called the Israeli bombing “blatant, treacherous and cowardly”.

The GCC countries, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, have formed a defence pact to address the security concerns of the member states.

In his opening remarks, Sheikh Tamim said that his country was subjected to an attack targeting residential housing for the families of Hamas leaders and their negotiating delegation. The Hamas leaders had been meeting to discuss the latest United States-backed proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Sheikh Tamim called for concrete steps to address the state of madness of power, arrogance, and bloodthirstiness of the government of Israel.

The emergency summit of the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) was organised in Doha after fury swept the regional Israel strikes on September 9, killing six people.

Israel’s attack on Qatar was part of a broader wave of strikes conducted across the borders, marking the sixth country Israel had targeted in the past few days, and the seventh since the year started.

The Qatari leader also condemned the continuous derailment of Gaza ceasefire talks, stating that Israel must know that its genocidal activities in Gaza won’t work, no matter what false justification it provides.
