Renowned British author Neil Gaiman faced fresh allegations of sexual misconduct and assault. In a New York Magazine article titled “There is no safe word,” eight women, including one Scarlett Pavlovich, who used to babysit the author’s child, accused Gaiman of sexual assault, coercion, and abuse. The Sandman author was previously accused of sexual assault in July last year.

According to Pavlovich, she agreed to babysit Gaiman and his former wife Amanda Palmer, whom she was close to, when Palmer was away. Pavlovich alleged that in February 2022 in New Zealand, the author encouraged her to take a bath in their old garden bathtub and joined her later. She claimed that Gaiman wanted her to call him “master” and forcefully penetrated her with his fingers and then with his penis.

At the time of the incident, Pavlovich confided in Palmer and filed a police report, but the case did not go forward. She claimed that she eventually signed an NDA regarding the assault, and Gaiman paid her a total of $9,200 over the course of nine months.

Another woman called Caroline accused Gaiman of putting her hand on his penis while she had fallen asleep in a bed. The incident occurred while the author’s son was fast asleep in the middle. Pavlovich also raised similar accusations of the author sexually assaulting her while his son was present.

Another woman called Kendra Stout alleged that the author would engage in BDSM, although there was no discussion of ‘safe words’ or ‘aftercare’ or ‘limits,’ and he “didn’t believe in foreplay or lubrication.”

According to the report, most of the women whom Gaiman allegedly abused were in their 20s, with the youngest being 18 years old. Gaiman was in his 40s or older at the time of the alleged assaults.

In 2024, when the allegations first arose, Gaiman and his representative refuted them. He claimed that his relationship with Stout was never unlawful. Addressing the allegations by Pavlovich, he claimed that she had a condition owing to which she had false memories.

Five women had raised similar accusations of sexual assault against the Good Omens author. The allegations were made in a six-part podcast series titled Master by Tortoise Media.

Addressing the accusations, Harry Potter author JK Rowling took to X on Monday and questioned the literary community’s silence on the issue.

JK Rowling Reacts

“The literary crowd that had a hell of a lot to say about Harvey Weinstein before he was convicted has been strangely muted in its response to multiple accusations against Neil Gaiman from young women who’d never met, yet—as with Weinstein—tell remarkably similar stories,” wrote Rowling.

Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein (72) was found guilty of sexually assaulting former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006 and raping actress Jessica Mann in 2013. Over 80 women had accused him of sexual misconduct, kickstarting the #MeToo movement in the film industry.
