Paris police shot and critically wounded a hijab wearing woman in a Paris metro station on Tuesday morning. The Police have reported that the woman was behaving in a threatening manner.

One of the policemen reported to the Reuters that out of fear for their own safety, the police agents used their weapons. But they could not clarify what in the woman’s behaviour at the Bibliotheque Nationals de France station had prompted the officers to open fire. She is also said to have shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’(God is the Greatest), and ‘you are all going to die’, says Daily Mail.

The woman was given immediate medical assistance and it has been reported that the bullet pierced through the woman’s abdomen. She has been immediately moved to the hospital and her condition is reported to be critical, reports Wion.

France has been in its highest alert ever since the Oct 13 murder of a school teacher in a suspected extremist attack which officials have linked to what they called a “Jihadist atmosphere” linked to the Israel-Gaza war.

After the passengers on the suburban train was alerted, officers managed to ‘isolate’ the women at the station on the French capital’s south bank, leading to a stand-off.

According to the police, the women who dressed in Islamic Hijab ‘threatened to blow herself up’. Soon after the incident, the station was shut down, soldiers surrounded the area and civilians evacuated.

A spokesperson for the Paris prosecutor’s office declared two investigations, one was against the woman or “apology for terrorism, death threats and acts of intimidation” and the second investigation was also opened into “intentional violence with a weapon by a person holding public authority” – in this case a police officer.

While France President Emmanuel Macron has called for the unity over the war because France is home to many western Europe’s largest Muslim and Jewish communities.
