Dr Saveera Parkash, a member of Hindu community has filed her nomination papers for general elections in Pakistan, for the country’s upcoming general election. She is from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Buner district in Pakistan, as reported by Dawn. She is contesting on Pakistan People Party (PPP) ticket. Her father Oam Prakash has been an active member of the party for the past 35 years.

Another politician, Saleem Khan, who is associated with the Qaumi Watan Party said that Ms. Parkash was the first woman from the Buner district to file her nomination papers for the upcoming general election. Ms Parkash, holds the position of general secretary of the PPP party’s woman’s wing in Buner. She was graduated from Abbottabad International Medical College in 2022.

While talking to Dawn, she stressed her commitment towards working for the well-being of the women in the region. According to Ms. Parkash, women have been consistently “oppressed and overlooked”, especially in realm of development. She said she wanted to follow her father’s footsteps in working for the poor in the area.

Dr Saveera Parkash shared optimistic views on her party’s endorsement for candidacy. She said that “senior leadership” from the party had approached her father to allow her to run for general election. She said her inclinations to “serve humanity” was inherent, which was increased by the firsthand experiences of helplessness she witnessed during her tenure as a doctor in government hospitals.

A social media influencer from Buner district, Imran Noshad Khan, conveyed his support for Ms. Parkash regardless of her political affiliation. He said that she was challenging the traditional patriarchy and noted that it took 55 years “since Buner merged with Pakistan for a woman to step forward and contest in election”. Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), under its recent amendments, made it mandatory of the presence of five percent of women candidates in general seats.
